People in Lhasa, known as the "city
of sunshine", began their night life at 9:00 pm
everyday, two hours later than other Chinese cities except
Urumqi in Xinjiang.
The city has
the name because the annual sunshine in Lhasa totals 3,000
hours on average. The night sky in Lhasa is less polluted
compared with other cities. The sky is studded with
twinkling stars.
Potala Palace,
situated on Red Hill 3,700 meters above sea level, looks
magnificent and mystic at night.
Crowds of Tibetan Buddhists walk in front of
Johkang Monastery with chanting wheels in their hands. They
remain praying until midnight.
Overlooking Lhasa on the Yaowang Mountain, one can
see the main avenues are decorated with neon lights. Local
residents and overseas tourists pass their spare time at
ballrooms and karaoke halls in the streets.
A ballroom entitled "Youngsters' Club"
is decorated with colorful frescos, Hada, a piece of white
silk used by the Tibetans to show respect and the portrait
of the Panchan Lama. Performers, clad in Tibetan garments,
sing in Chinese and Tibetan. Visitors are intoxicated in the
dance with ethnic flavor.
On the
western suburbs of the city, there is a market which is 100
meters wide and 1,000 meters long. Thousands of booths
provides snacks from all provinces and regions in
China.
The night life came to a
climax around 2:00 am the following day. Enditem
